What happens on Midsummer Eve?

Church boats are rowed to the Midsummer celebration. With musicians and folk dancers, the procession then continues to Gropen, where the maypole is raised. Ring dances, folk music and dancing follow – with thousands dancing Små grodorna together.

Midsummer Eve falls on Friday 25 June 2027. The celebration takes place in Gropen – walk there in good time to get a good spot by the maypole. Book your room early, as Leksand fills up quickly at Midsummer. Leksand Municipality and Visit Dalarna publish the current programme and times.

Church boats, the maypole and Gropen

Leksand Municipality describes the celebration with church boats, fiddlers and circle dancing. A kyrkbåt is the long rowing boat associated with this local tradition. Visit Dalarna describes choirs and fiddlers arriving by boat along Österdalälven, followed by a procession to Gropen carrying wreaths for the maypole. That describes the tradition, not a confirmed timetable for 2027. Check the municipality's programme before planning the day.

Midsummer Eve 2027 is Friday 25 June. Gropen is on Kyrkallén in central Leksand. Allow time for the walk and check when the organiser recommends arriving. We do not give a walking time to Gropen because it has not been confirmed from the hotel.

Before the Midsummer weekend

Book accommodation once you know which nights you need. If travelling with children, give their ages and tell us whether you need an extra bed or cot. Pack rainwear and shoes for a day outdoors; an event programme is no promise about the weather. Read the parking information before setting off too. Spaces beside the hotel and the square car park have different conditions, and you need to follow the signs where you park.

After the celebration, return to your room. Self check-in starts at 15:00; follow the instructions sent before arrival. Breakfast the next morning follows the weekend hours.
